If you have a passion for helping others, enjoy working with children and have a welcoming and inclusive nature then we think you’d make a great Swim Instructor. Our team is filled with friendly and vibrant personalities, and our programs run year-round across multiple BlueFit locations.

Whether you have previous experience or a willingness to learn, the BlueFit Swim Instructor Program will support you through the process of becoming a qualified swim instructor, including the opportunity to gain hands-on experience at your local BlueFit facility.

The program will include the following (subject to the terms and conditions listed below):

  • Free Training – Swimming and Water Safety Teacher (SISSS00112) Course
  • Work Experience Placement Program (20 hours): To assist bridge the gap between the Swimming and Water Safety Teacher course and employment, participants will be provided a work experience placement at their local BlueFit facility. In this unpaid work experience placement participants will gain important job skills and knowledge that will enhance their chance of employment.

Terms and Conditions

Program Eligibility

  • To eligible for the selection in the program the following criteria must be met
  • 16 years of age or over.
  • Be available to attend an in person information session or online interview.
  • Be available to attend the scheduled course date for the Swimming & Water Safety Teacher certificate.
  • Be able to swim 25m confidently.
  • Participate in the Work Experience Placement Program (20 hours) at your local BlueFit facility for a four week period immediately post the Swimming & Water Safety Teacher course.
  • Hold a volunteer Working with Children Check
  • Have good communication skills and a passion for teaching people new skills.
  • Availability to complete a minimum of 2 swim teacher shifts per week, for a minimum of 6 months, if employment is successfully obtained at the conclusion of the program.
  • Please note there is no guarantee of employment at the completion of the program.

Employment Eligibility

  • Hold a  SISSS0012 – Swimming & Water Safety Teacher Certificate & completed the Work Experience Practical Placement Program.
  • Hold a current HLTAID009 – Provide Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation & HLTAID011 Provide First Aid qualification, or a willingness to obtain at your own cost.
  • If you are eligible you must obtain a valid employee Working with Children Check in accordance with your state at your own cost.
  • Successfully attend and participate in an employment interview post the completion of the program.
  • Be available for a minimum of (2) swim teacher shifts per week, for a minimum of 6 months.
  • Please note there is no guarantee of employment at the completion of the program.

Free Training

  • Free training is only available for the SISSS0012 – Swimming & Water Safety Teacher course delivered by Southern Education
  • Work Experience Placement Program (20 hours):  This program is to assist bridge the gap between the Swimming and Water Safety Teacher course and employment. Participants will be provided a work experience placement at their local BlueFit facility. In this unpaid work experience placement participants will gain important job skills and knowledge that will enhance their chance of employment.

Frequently Asked Questions

What qualifications do I need to hold to participate in the program?

There are no qualification requirements to complete the Swimming and Water Safety Teacher course, but to participate in the Work Experience Practical Placement Program with BlueFit  you will require a volunteer Working with Children Check.

To be considered for employment with BlueFit at the completion of the program you will need to hold the following

Your first aid and CPR qualification can be obtained through Southern Education or any other provider. Please ensure the course code matches the above codes.

Does it matter that I have never been a swimmer or coach before?

You don’t have to have been a competitive or strong swimmer to become a Swim Instructor. You do need to be able to swim 25m, and then the course and the Work Experience Practical Placement Program will give you the practical skills and resources to teach children to swim. We have had so many previous applicants share that they didn’t think becoming a Swim Instructor was for them as they weren’t a strong swimmer or haven’t swam  competitively, but now they are qualified and teaching in our program.

I can't see a program in my state? What if I miss the application deadline for my state?

While you won’t be eligible for selection in the program BlueFit will still provide you with the opportunity to complete an upcoming Swimming and Water Safety Teacher Course with Southern Education free of charge. Please still register your interest via the apply now form.

Are the pools heated?

The majority of our swim school locations are conducted indoors in heated pools. 

What happens if I can not attend the Swimming and Water Safety Teacher Course on the set date?

As this is a program with a set start and finish date, if you can’t attend the course date you won’t be eligible to participate in the program or be eligible for the bonus. BlueFit will still provide you with the opportunity to complete an upcoming Swimming and Water Safety Teacher Course with Southern Education free of charge.

What happens if I am successful in obtaining employment at the completion of the Work Experience Practical Placement Program, but I can't start work immediately?

You will still remain employed and can commence work when you are available (as long as it is within four weeks).

What happens if I am unsuccessful in obtaining employment at the end of the program?

If you are unsuccessful in obtaining employment at the end of the program, but obtained your Swimming and Water Safety Certificate and completed the Work Experience Practical Placement Program at your local BlueFit Facility you will be placed within our talent pool for consideration for any roles that become available in the future.

If I am successful in obtaining employment at BlueFit after completion of the program, do I need to obtain my CPR, First Aid and Working With Children Check before I can teach my first class?

Yes, you will need to hold a current CPR, First Aid and if eligible and an employee Working with Children check before you can teach a class.
